Tango Release: sunday 6th September- 4th of October- 1st November - 6th December 2009

'Harmonizing' will be the theme for the Autumn sessions, working on and developing the harmonizing of concepts such as lines, crosses, circles, spirals (inspired by my recent visit to Richard Long exhibition at Tate Britain)
http://www.richardlong.org

other inspirations comes from 'harmonizing' different styles. here is a brief tango by AKRAM KHAN and SYLVIE GUILLEM as they explore the dynamics and language of two great classical dance forms, kathak and ballet:

and from the work of one of the pioneers of dance fusion Shobana Jeyasingh, here with her Dance Company in 'Faultline' (i saw this live last week: a-m-a-z-i-n-g!)

An inspiring Tango challenging.... gravity!

Steve Paxton, originator of Contact Improvisation, talks about the development of the form.
I try to use some of those principles to shift the perpendicularity of Tango into diagonals, in order to develop a spherical dialogue. In this way it is possibile to challenge gravity (even if momentarily!) and open new possibilities for partnered movement.

Tango Release: sunday 3rd May 2009

2-3.30 pm - Class with Adriana Pegorer
'negotiating ganchos (hooks) for changes of directions'

Adriana is interested in the inter-waving of dance forms. She draws from principles of Contact Improvisation, Skinner releasing techinque, BMC, Feldenkrais, Aikido and Butoh, that she studied with Kirstie Simson, Rick Nodine, KJHomes, Thomas Kampe, Jackie Adkins, Gaby Agis, Kate Brown, Sasha Roubicek, Giovanni Felicioni, Scott Smith, Masaki Iwana amongst others.
In Tango she started in 1996 with Alison Vale and Paul and Michiko amongst others and her main influences are Carlos Gavito and Pablo Veron.

Please view this inspiring clip (sorry, embedding was disabled) with Piazzolla describing how the bandoneon 'functions'.

I will relate to these ideas in the class, on how oppositions can co-exist harmonically in particular with the displacement of the traditional embrace. Also: how much effort is needed for support and/or release?
